Valley Sports Report is dedicated to providing the most extensive, accurate and well-written coverage of high school and youth sports in the Valley. It is our goal to promote the three Valley schools and their athletes in an effort to provide the scholar-athletes exposure that may lead to future opportunities in athletics at the next level.
Tim Birney was born and raised in the Valley, graduating from Waverly High School in 1984. He earned an Associate's Degree in Journalism from SUNY Morrisville in 1986 and a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism/Public Relations from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1988. He began his newspaper career at The Daily Review in Towanda in 1989, before moving on to The Evening Times in 1995. He spent more than 10 years at the Times, the last four as Managing Editor.
Tim Taylor was born and raised in nearby Nichols, graduating from Tioga Central High School in 1979. He began his journalism career at The Evening Times as a part-time sports writer/photographer in 1983. In 1985 he embarked on a 22-year career with the Air Force and Air Force Reserve. An honor graduate at the Defense Information School, he spent 19 years in Public Affairs and is a veteran of Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. From 1996 to 2004 he was editor of Ranchland News in eastern Colorado, as well as a wrestling coach and referee. In 2009 he worked for the Colorado Springs Gazette as a freelance sports writer.
