WAVERLY — Athens scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to rally from an early deficit en route to an 8-1 win over Waverly here Wednesday afternoon in non-league junior varsity baseball action.
Waverly took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Elijah Kraft drew a two-out walk, and ended up scoring on back-to-back singles by Noah Carpenter and Ethan Stotler.
In the top of the fourth, Jeff Reagan led off with a single and Nick Watkins followed with a double to put Athens runners on second and third. After a squeeze bunt by Brady Smith tied the game at 1-1, Joel Maslin gave Athens the lead with a single.
Athens used a pair of Waverly errors in the fifth inning to plate a run, and then took advantage of three junior Wolverine errors in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
Maslin had three hits including a double, and scored a run to pace Athens at the plate, while Nick Watkins and Chase Minnick each singled twice and scored a run, and Kaden Rude and Jeff Reagan singled and scored a run.
Aaron Lane added a single for Athens, and Brady Smith scored a run.
Reagan and Lane shared the pitching duties for the junior Wildcats. They gave up just three hits, and combined to fan eight and walk four.
Colby Sindoni, Stotler, and Carpenter each singled for Waverly, and Kraft scored a run.
Woodring took the tough loss for Waverly. He allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits, while striking out six and walking one in five innings of work.
