THE VALLEY — With the postseason looming, the only games in town today are at Riverfront Park with crosstown rivals Athens invading Sayre.
Athens (15-2) at Sayre (13-4), 4:30 p.m.: The Redskins are coming off a 10-0 loss to Towanda in a non-league game Monday, while the Wildcats thumped Towanda, 22-3, Thursday.
In their first meeting, which counted as the league game, Sayre topped Athens, 7-1. Today's game is a non-league contest.
The Wildcats lead Mansfield by 1/2-game in the Large School standings, and can clinch the division with a win at Wyalusing Friday in the regular-season finale.
The Redskins lead Cowanesque Valley by 1 1/2 games in the Small School standings. They can clinch the division Thursday at home against Northeast Bradford. They host CV Friday.
Athens has locked up the top seed in the upcoming Class AAAA playoffs, which will feature at least six teams, and possibly eight.
Sayre is likely to be the third seed in the upcoming Class A playoffs. With just four teams in the bracket, the Redskins will almost certainly be on the road in the semifinals.
Athens (7-8) at Sayre (1-14), 4:30 p.m.: The Lady Wildcats are coming off 5-1 win over Towanda Thursday, while the Lady Redskins dropped a 10-0 decision at Towanda Monday.
Athens needs to win three of its final four games to qualify for the postseason. They travel to Wyalusing Friday, and host Western Wayne in a doubleheader Saturday.
