BETHLEHEM, Pa.  Athens grad Tyler Forbes, a sophomore on the Northampton College baseball team, threw six shutout innings to earn the win in an 8-0 win over Luzerne County CC in the first game of a best-of-three series Sunday in the Region IX playoffs.

Forbes was also recently named to the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference all-conference team.

Towanda grad Tristan James also turned in a stellar performance in the nightcap as Northampton swept the series with a 10-0 win to advance to the Region IX Final Four this weekend.

Forbes allowed just two hits, and fanned 11 in six innings to earn the win for the Spartans.

Fellow Athens grad Zane Vargason, also a sophomore at Northampton, laced a two-run single in the second inning to give the Spartans the early lead.

Vargason, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win, sealed the victory in the seventh inning with an RBI single.

James closed out the Spartans win in the nightcap with two innings of perfect relief that included four strikeouts.

Vargason was 1-for-2 in the nightcap.

On the season, Forbes is 4-1 with a 2.31 ERA. He has 64 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings, and has yielded just 24 hits.

Forbes now holds the school record for career strikeouts currrently at 126, shattering the previous record of 111.

Forbes is 13th in the nation in strikeouts / IP at 12.34, 18th in the country in ERA, and 29th in the country in strikeouts.

Forbes has signed to play Division II baseball next season at West Chester University.

Vargason finished the regular-season strong and is hitting .295 (18 hits in 61 Abs) with three doubles, 18 runs scored, 12 RBI, and one stolen base.

Northampton, now 32-5 and ranked fifth in the nation, will face RCGC (Rowan College Gloucester Colege), now 43-12, in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament Saturday in Vineland, N.J.
