ATHENS — Athens erupted for 14 runs in its final two at-bats to erase an early deficit en route to a 14-4 win over NEBall here Sunday afternoon in Mid-East pool play in the District 15 Little League Minors Division baseball playoffs.

NEBall plated a run in the top of the first inning, and two more in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Athens scored five runs with the key blows a an RBI triple by Matthias Welles, and RBI single by Dylan Saxon, and a two-run triple by Eli Hobday to cap the rally.

After NEBall scored a run in the top of the fourth to trim the deficit to 5-4, Athens plated nine runs to end the game via the 10-run “mercy” rule.

Matthew Driesbaugh drove in the first two runs with a two-run double, and also ended the game with an RBI single. In between, Athens stroked five consecutive singles (by Saxon, Riley Campbell, Oliver Johnson, Eli Hobday, and Cooper Robinson).

Driesbaugh had four hits, including a double, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Saxon stroked three singled, scored two runs, and knocked in a run to lead Athens at the plate, while Hobday tripled and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI

Carson Rowe singled twice and scored two runs in the win, while Welles tripled, scored two runs, and drove in a run, Johnson singled and scored two runs, Robinson and Campbell singled and scored a run, and Nick Grazul scored a run.
