CORNING — Tioga freshman Sam Taylor won his division by five strokes, and Sayre junior Ryan Murrelle won his via tiebreaker here Monday afternoon at the Ester Cannizzo Junior Golf Foundation Tournament, which is a stop on the Central New York PGA Junior Tour.
Taylor shot an even-par 70 on the 6,310-yard Corning Country Club course, which was the low round of the day regardless of age group, to win the 15U Division.
Taylor birdied the first hole, a 400-yard par-4, then bogeyed the next two holes. He scored an eagle on the 386-yard, par-4 6th hole and finished the front nine with a 33, and a 4-stroke lead over both Tyler Thomas of Corning and Daniel Ames of Addison, who each shot 37.
Taylor recorded pars on the first six holes of the back nine — to give him nine straight pars. After a bogey on 16, Taylor birdied the 339-yard, par-4 17th hole, then closed out his round with a bogey for a 37 on the back nine.
Thomas shot a 38 on the back nine to finish second with a 75, and Ames shot a 79 to finish third.
Murrelle, Doug Matthews of Vestal, and Trevor Jones of Binghamton each set rounds of 78, but Murrelle was declared the winner after the cards were matched.
Murrelle and Matthews each shot 37 on the front nine, while Jones shot a 40.
On the back, Murrelle and Jones were tied for the lead after 16 holes, but Matthews birdied the 17th holes, and Jones bogeyed it to send Murrelle and Matthews to the 18th tee tied for the lead.
Jones birdied 18, while Murrelle and Matthews each scored a par to end the round with the threesome tied at 78.
Trevor Gardner of Dryden was fourth with 79.
