ATHENS — Mason Lister drove home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Athens to a 4-3 win over Sayre here Monday evening in Mid-East pool play in the District 15 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.
Athens wins pool play, but both teams advance to double-elimination bracket play for the District 15 title.
Zack Garrity laced a one-out single in the top of the first inning and Lucas Horton worked a walk, but Athens starter Mason Lister pitched out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
Evan Sickler led off the bottom of the first with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Jaren Glisson lined an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0.
Caleb Nichols then delivered a two-run bomb one the center-field fence to make it 3-0.
Athens proceeded to load the bases without a hit, but Sayre starter Jackson Hubbard pitched out of further trouble with a pop out, and a strikeout.
Sayre did not have another hit until Kaden Setzer led off the sixth inning with a line-drive double. He scored on an RBI triple to right field by Garrity that trimmed the deficit to 3-1.
After a walk to Lucas Horton, Hubbard hit an RBI single up the middle to slice the lead to 3-2.
After a walk to Kegan Hayford, Kaden Bennett hit a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the score at 3-3.
Athens reliever Carson Smith pitched out of further trouble, and stranded the go-ahead run at third base with back-to-back strikeouts.
Smith also drew a walk to lead off the home half of the sixth inning. Pinch-runner Cameron Sullivan moved to third on a single by Garrett Thetga.
With one out, Lister grounded out to first base and Smith scampered home with the winning run.
Nichols slugged a two-run homer, and Lister doubled and drove in a run to lead Athens at the plate, while Glisson singled, scored a run, and drove in a run, Thetga singled, and Sickler and Sullivan each scored a run.
Lister threw two innings of shutout ball for Athens, allowing one hit, while striking out five and walking two. Nichols allowed one run on one hit in three innings of work, while striking out five and walking none.
Smith earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out two and walking two in one inning of work.
Garrity tripled and singled, and scored a run to lead Sayre at the plate, while Setzer doubled and scored a run, Hubbard singled and drove in a run, Horton scored a run, and Bennett knocked in a run.
Hubbard was tagged for three runs on two hits, while striking out one and walking two in one inning on the mound, while Horton tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk, and striking out three.
Hayford was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing one one run on one hit in 1 2/3 innings on the mound. He fanned four and walked one.
Athens will host the East pool runner-up Tunkhannock Wednesday, while Sayre travels to play the winner of the East pool, RTL.
