WAVERLY Jay Pipher banged out four hits, and Kaden Wheeler belted a pair of long home runs to power Waverly to a 14-3 win over Elmira Heights here Monday evening in the opening round of the District 15 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.
Bryce Bailey led off the top of the first inning for Waverly, playing as the visiting team, with a double, and scored on an RBI double by Jake VanHouten to make it 1-0.
With one out, Wheeler drilled a 3-1 pitch over the center-field fence to give Waverly a 3-0 lead.
Elmira Heights loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning, but Waverly starter Bryce Bailey recorded a strikeout to escape the frame without any damage.
Waverly added three more runs in the second inning to make it 6-0. Back-to-back doubles Jay Pipher and Brayden Talada made it 4-0.
Waverly tacked on another run on a groundout off the bat of VanHouten to make it 5-0, and Bailey stole home to extend the lead to 6-0.
Pipher and Talada belted RBI doubles in the top of the third inning, and VanHouten stroked an RBI single to make it 9-0.
After Elmira Heights scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning, Wheeler led off the top of the fourth inning with another blast over the center-field fence to make it 10-2.
Pipher was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and two RBI, and Wheeler had two home runs and three RBI to power Waverlys 13-hit attack, while VanHouten doubled and singled, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Brayden Talada doubled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.
Bailey doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in a run in the win, while Tomasso singled, stole two bases, and knocked in a run, and Gage Tedesco scored a pair of runs.
Bailey earned the win with two innings of one-hit ball. He fanned four and walked two.
Blauvelt notched a save in relief. He allowed three runs one earned on four hits, while striking out six and walking two.
Waverly returns to action Wednesday at Horseheads. Game time is 6 p.m.
