|DISTRICT 6 LITTLE LEAGUE (MAJORS): HORSEHEADS STRIKES EARLY IN 11-3 WIN OVER WAVERLY (2017-06-29)

HORSEHEADS — Horseheads jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 11-3 win over Waverly here Thursday night in the second round of the District 6 Little League Majors Division playoffs.
Horseheads, playing as the home team, took advantage of three walks, a hit batsman, and an error, and also banged out three hits to plate four runs in the top of the first inning.
Horseheads tacked on two runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 6-0, before Waverly finally broke into the scoring column with a run in the home half of the fourth inning.
Kaden Wheeler and Brady Blauvelt led off the bottom of the fourth inning with consecutive singles, and Jay Pipher knocked Wheeler home with a two-out RBI single to make it 6-1.
Horseheads put the game away with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Joey Tomasso provided Waverly’s final two runs of the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tomasso homered and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI to lead Waverly’s seven-hit attack, while Pipher singled and drove in a run, and Wheeler singled and scored a run.
Jake VanHouten, Blauvelt, and Brayden Talada each had a single for Waverly, and Bryce Bailey scored one run.
Tomasso was tagged with the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, while striking out six and walking six. Pipher gave up three earned runs on five hits and one walk in 1 12/3 innings.
Waverly returns to action Monday when it hosts the loser of Friday’s consolation bracket game between Big Flats and Elmira Heights.
