ATHENS — Athens raced out to a big lead and then held on for a 14-11 win over Potter-McKean here Sunday afternoon in consolation bracket action in the District 15 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.
Caleb Nichols provided nearly all the offense early with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and a two-run shot in the third inning to help Athens to a 5-0 lead. Korey Miller added an RBI single in the first inning.
Potter-McKean took advantage of a catcher’s interference call, two walks, and a hit batsman to score two runs on just one hit in the bottom of the third to trim the deficit to 5-2.
Athens answered quickly in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single by Garrett Thetga to take a 6-2 lead. They pushed the lead to 7-2 on a P-M error.
Later in the inning, P-M intentionally-walked Nichols to load the bases, but Evan Sickler made them pay with a line-drive grand slam home run to right field to make it 11-2.
P-M kept it interesting with five runs in the home half of the fourth to pull within four runs, at 11-7.
Athens kept it rolling, however, as Mason Lister worked a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth inning to force home a run, and Jaren Glisson hit a clutch two-out, two-RBI double to make it 14-7.
P-M scored twice in the fifth and two more times in the sixth inning, but Thetga closed out the game on the mound for Athens.
Lucas Schmoyer stroked three singles and scored two runs to lead Athens’ 12-hit attack, while Nichols homered twice and had four RBI, Sickler homered and had four RBI, and Lister singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in a run.
Glisson doubled, scored two runs, and had two RBI in the win, while Thetga singled, scored a run, and knocked in a run, Miller singled and drove in a run, Lucas Kraft added a double, and Nicholas Jacob scored three runs.
Nichols started on the mound for Athens and earned the win, striking out nine and walking three in 3 1/3 innings, while allowing seven runs on five hits. Thetga pitched the final two innings for the save, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking two.
Athens returns to action Wednesday in the consolation bracket semifinals at RTL.
