BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. — Tioga sophomore-to-be Sam Taylor took the outright lead on the fifth hole and never relinquished it en route to a win here Wednesday at the Timber Banks Golf Club stop on the Central New York PGA Junior Tour.

Taylor not only won the 15U Division, but was the low-medalist regardless of age on the day, shooting a 1-over par 73 on the 6,199-yard, par-72 course.

Taylor and Shawn Colella of Marcellus parred the first four holes, but Taylor birdied the 398-yard, par-4 5th hole, while Colella registered another par.

Taylor shot a 1-under par 35 on the front nine, and led Coella by two strokes at the turn, while John Gruninger of Syracuse shot a 38, and Seth Conway of Big Flats shot a 40.

All four golfers bogeyed the 10th hole, then Taylor upped his lead on the other three golfers in the top four by two strokes (leading runner-up Gruninger by five strokes) with a birdie on the 529-yard, par-5 11th hole to their bogeys.

Taylor also recorded a birdie on the 158-yard, par-3 13th hole, and the 335-yard, par-4 17th hole.

He shot a 38 on the back nine, as did Gruninger, who finished second with a 76. Conway was third with an 80, while Colella and Liverpool’s Spencer Baum finished tied for fourth with an 82.

Taylor, who has won the only two events he's played in two Central N.Y. PGA Tour this summer, is in fourth place in the “Player of the Year” standings — 30 points out of first place.
