OWEGO —Despite pitcher Dani Kindrew's strong effort, the Nichols-Tioga 12- and Under All-Stars dropped a 5-4 decision to Owego B in Owego Tournament round-robin play.
Kindrew threw five strong innings, three of them 1-2-3, striking out nine and walking two, while allowing eight hits. He was relieved in the sixth by Hunter Singer, who struck out two more, allowed one hit and walked one to close the game.
Owego took an early two-run lead in the top of first, but Nick Cotto came home in the bottom of the first on Tyler Whitmore's double to close the gap to 2-1.
Nichols-Tioga briefly led the game after scoring two more runs in the bottom of the second. Brendan Gillette scored on a passed ball after reaching via a base on balls, and Kindrew, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, was batted in by a Singer double.
A three-run rally by Owego in the top of the third put them back on top at 5-3, and even though the Nichols-Tioga boys outhit Owego 12-6, they managed only one more run, again by Kindrew, in the bottom of the fourth.
Adding to the Nichols-Tioga hitting effort were Matthew Lounsbury, Nick Cotto and Zack Krapf with two singles each, Adam Layman with a double, and Gabe Hoose with a single.
Nichols-Tioga faces Ithaca 'B' at p.m. Saturday in its final round robin game.
