OWEGO TOURNAMENT: VESTAL "A" USES BIG INNING TO DOWN WAVERLY, 12-8 (2010-07-24)

Valley Sports Report
OWEGO — Vestal "A" answered a big Waverly inning with one of its own in posting a 12-8 win here Friday in Owego Major Division Tournament.

Vestal scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Waverly countered with a seven-run rally in the top of the second inning, highlighted by Hunter Bodine's grand slam.

Parker Hendershot led off the rally with a single, Jacob Goble then reached on an error and D.J. Meyers drew a walk to load the bases. After a fielder's choice groundout left the bases loaded, a walk to Mason Beard forced home the first run. Bodine then delivered the big blow in the inning, blasting a shot over the center field fence to put Waverly ahead 5-2.

Mason Salsman started another mini-rally by drawing a walk and Peyton Miller doubled to put runners on second and third. Hendershot capped the rally with a two-run double to give Waverly a 7-2 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Vestal answered with six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an 8-7 lead.

Vestal tacked on a run in the bottom of the third inning and three more in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 12-7 lead.

Waverly managed a run in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Bodine, who eventually scored on an RBI single by Goble.

Bodine paced the Waverly attack with two hits, including his grand slam, four RBI and two runs scored, and Hendershot added two hits and two RBI. Miller and Goble each added a single and a run scored.

Waverly was scheduled to play Sunday morning at 9 a.m. in Owego, but a conflict with the championship game in the Elmira Heights Wooden Bat Tournament forced them to drop into the consolation bracket. Their next game in the Owego Tournament will be Wednesday at 6 p.m.
