SECTION IV FOOTBALL: FEWER TEAMS IN CLASS D MEANS CHANGES TO DIVISION ALIGNMENTS, PLAYOFFS (2018-03-26)

TIOGA TO SQUARE OFF WITH WAVERLY OCT. 12

Valley Sports Report

TIOGA CENTER — Section IV’s Class D football ranks will shrink to 11 teams in 2018 — down from 16 teams in 2017, thanks in part to the growing popularity of 8-man football among smaller schools.

Tioga will be in Division VI in 2018, which greatly resemble Division VII from last year. The only change is Greene’s addition, with Edison bumping up Class C, and Newfield switching to 8-man football.

Division VI will also include Notre Dame, Moravia, and Groton.

Class D’s, Division V will be comprised of Bainbridge-Guilford, Deposit-Hancock, Sidney, Unatego, and Walton.

Harpursville-Afton has bumped up to Class C, while Unadilla Valley, and Oxford will be playing 8-man football.

Unlike the last several years, Class D will have an eight-week regular season in 2018 with two weeks of playoff games, which means the top two teams from each division will advance to the semifinals.
