TIGERS IN SECOND PLACE IN TEAM STANDINGS
Valley Sports ReportCANANDAIGUA — Tioga advanced nine wrestlers to the quarterfinals here Friday night, and is in second place in the team standings here after Day 1 of the Robert Bradshaw Invitational, while Sayre has three wrestlers in the quarterfinals Saturday morning.
The Tigers advance seniors John Worthing, Austin Lamb, Zac Warner, and Stephen Taylor, juniors David MacWhinnie, Brady Worthing, Dom Wood and Jared Lamb, freshman Emmett Wood, and 7th-grader Caden Bellis.
Still alive in wrestlebacks for the Tigers are 7th-grader Gianni Silvestri, freshman Mason Welch, 8th-grader Emily Sindoni, senior Joe Lloyd, and junior Aaron Howard.
Sayre advanced freshmen Daniel Horton and Josh Wilson and sophomore Jordan Goodrich to the quarterfinals, and have freshmen Jacob Bennett and Nikolas Polzella, and seniors Zaine Patnode and Thomas Hendricks alive in the consolation bracket.
Webster-Thomas leads the team standings with 75 points, while Tioga tallied 71.5 points, third-place Pioneer had 61 points, fourth-place Horseheads had 55 points, and fifth-place Chenango Forks had 54. Sayre is in 21st place in the 24-team field with 10 points.
At 99 pounds, Bellis, the third seed, registered a pin of Andrew Zelie of Pal-Mac in 5:36 in the opening round, then forged a 10-3 advantage over Xander Kirsch of Pioneer to advance to the quarterfinals.
Bellis will face Horseheads’ Ryan Massengale Saturday morning in the quarterfinals.
Also at 99, Tioga 7th-grader Gianni Silvestri dropped his first bout via a 6-0 decision to Adam Barbara of Victor, but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a pin of Zeile in 2:23.
At 106 pounds, Horton topped Irondequoit’s Joe Fabrizzi, who was the fourth seed, 6-3 in the opening round. Horton will face Jon Battoglia of Pal-Mac in the quarterfinals.
At 113 pounds, Tioga freshman Mason Welch, the second seed, decked Chenango Forks’ Dylan Furman in 57 seconds in the opening round, but dropped a 4-3 decision in the second round to Tommy Dale of Horseheads.
Welch bounced back in wrestlebacks with a 33-second pin of Xavier Hill of Pal-Mac.
Also at 113, Sayre freshman Cameron McCutcheon went 0-2 Friday night.
At 120 pounds, Tioga freshman Emily Sindoni bounced back from a loss to top seed C.J. Lee of Webster-Thomas in the opening round, with a pin of Sam Karshick of Ironedquiot in 1:38 seconds in the second round.
Also at 120 pounds, Sayre freshman Jaydon Gardner went 0-2.
At 126 pounds, MacWhinnie pinned Pioneer’s Alex Miley in 1:03 in the opening round. He will face fourth-seed Calum Houper of Horseheads in the quarterfinals.
At 132 pounds, Brady Worthing, the second seed, pinned Port Byron’s Ike Svitavsky in 2:54 in the opening round, then forged a 17-1 technical fall win over Mike Smithers of Webster-Thomas to advance to the quarterfinals.
Brady Worthing will face Louie Menard of Horseheads in the quarterfinals.
Also at 132 pounds, Sayre freshman Robert Benjamin was 0-2 on the day.
At 138 pounds, John Worthing, the top seed, decked Mason Rusinko of Geneva in 1:42 in the opening round, then flattened Zach Dennis of Port Byron in 1:05 in the second round.
John Worthing will face Sam Quick of Pal-Mac in the quarterfinals.
At 145 pounds, Austin Lamb, the top seed, flattened Marcus Whitman’s Mason Bishop in 38 seconds in the opening round, then pinned Sayre freshman Jacob Bennett in 1:47 in the second round.
Lamb will square off with Geneva’s Andrew Mateo in the quarterfinals.
Bennett bounced back in wrestlebacks with a 6-1 win over Jared Merklinger of Irondequoit.
At 152 pounds, Emmett Wood, the fourth seed, registered a pin of Nathan Constantino in 67 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals. He will face Marcus Whitman’s Chad Smith in the quarterfinals.
Also at 152 pounds, Sayre senior Thomas Hendricks bounced back from an opening-round loss to pin Canandaigua’s Christian Wall in 4:10 in the first round of wrestlebacks.
Tioga senior Jerry Bleiler went 0-2 at 152 pounds.
At 160 pounds, Warner pinned Victor’s Brock Corwin in 1:45 to advance to the quarterfinals. He will face Lee Abbey of Chenango Forks in the quarterfinals.
Also at 160 pounds, Sayre’s Zaine Patnode lost his opening-round match, and is still alive in wrestlebacks.
At 170 pounds, Wilson decked German Villtoro of Pal-Mac in 1:32 to advance to the quarterfinals. He will face Hilton’s Billy Hart in the quarterfinals.
At 182 pounds, Dom Wood pinned Alexander’s Nello Paolucci in 1:20 in the opening round. He will face second-seed Chris Pannell of Webster-Thomas in the quarterfinals.
At 195 pounds, Goodrich and Jared Lamb received byes into the quarterfinals, while Tioga senior Joe Lloyd lost his opening-round match and is still alive in wrestlebacks.
At 220 pounds, Tioga senior Matt Babcock went 0-2.
At 285 pounds, Taylor pinned Polzella in 58 seconds in the opening round, then pinned Tyler Truesdail of Chenango Forks in 3:29 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Taylor will face Alexander’s Jonathan Bigsby in the quarterfinals.
Polzella is still alive in wrestlebacks.
Also at 285 pounds, Tioga junior Aaron Howard lost his opening-round match and is still alive in wrestlebacks.
