IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR KNOCKS OFF TIOGA, 39-33 (2019-01-15)

TIOGA CENTER - Candor built an eight-point cushion at the half, and held off Tioga in the second half for a 39-33 win here Tuesday night in IAC South Small School Division girls basketball action.

In a high-scoring first quarter, Braelyn Hornick scored six points, Searra Allen added four, and Paedyn Whitmore knocked down a 3-pointer to lead Candor to a 15-12 lead. Tioga sophomore Eve Wood knocked down a 3-pointer and scored six points, and junior Giovanna Rossi added four points to keep the Lady Tigers close.

The Lady Indian defense held Tioga to just one field goal in the second quarter, and four different Candor players put their name in the scoring column to extend the lead to 24-16 at the half.

Wood canned another 3-pointer in the third quarter for the Lady Tigers' only field goal, but they made 4 of 5 free-throw attempts and held Candor to just five points to trim the deficit to 29-23 heading into the final eight minutes.

Wood scored seven points in the fourth quarter, but Candor was able to hold on, despite making just 4 of 11 free-throw attempts. Tioga made 3 of 6 from the charity stripe in the final stanza.

Wood led Tioga with 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Rossi had seven points, and sophomore Olivia Ayres added six points.

Hornick led Candor with 13 points, while Allen had 10 points, and Jennah Kareem added eight points.

Tioga, now 3-10, returns to action Friday at Groton.
