NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: ATHENS PULLS AWAY FROM LANSING IN SECOND HALF IN 41-17 WIN (2019-01-16)

Valley Sports Report
LANSING - Athens overcame a slow start, and used a strong second-half effort to pull away from Lansing in a 41-17 win here Wednesday night in non-league girls basketball action.

Freshman Caydence Macik scored eight points to power the Lady Wildcats to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter.

Athens maintained its lead in the second eight minutes, taking a 16-8 lead into the intermission.

The Lady Wildcats turned up the defense in the third quarter and used a 13-3 blitz to take a 29-11 lead into the final eight minutes. Macik and junior Haley Barry scored five points apiece in the run, which would have created even more separation had Athens made more than just 5 of 12 free-throw attempts in the stanza.

Barry and sophomore Kayleigh Miller scored six points apiece in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on the win.

Macik led Athens with 15 points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals, while Barry had 13 points, four rebounds and four steals, and Miller added 10 points and four rebounds.

Senior Sophie Adams hauled down seven rebounds and nabbed three steals in the win, while junior Avery Priester doled out seven assists, and sophomore Rachel Stephens chipped in with four rebounds.

Morgan Boerman led Lansing with eight points.

Athens, now 8-5, returns to action Saturday at Wyalusing - weather permitting.
