NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: SAYRE TOPS COWANESQUE VALLEY IN OVERTIME, 63-59 (2019-01-16)

SAYRE - Cowanesque Valley forced overtime with a putback on the offensive glass at the buzzer, but Sayre used a 9-0 run in the extra session to post a 63-59 win here Wednesday night in NTL Small School Division boys basketball action.

In a game that featured 12 lead changes and eight tie scores, neither team led by more than seven points.

CV scored the first five points of the game, but Sayre countered with a 9-2 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer by sophomore Zach Moore, to take a 9-7 lead.

CV scored the next five points, but junior Corbin scored off on a short jumper, and Moore drained another 3-pointer in the closing moments of the first quarter to give the Redskins a 14-12 lead.

Sayre led throughout the third quarter, taking a five-point lead at 26-21 on a bucket by senior Gage Carnrike, but CV scored five straight points to tie the game at 26-26.

Senior Devin Ervin made a pair of free throws with 1:15 remaining in the second quarter to give the Redskins a 28-26 lead at the half.

Ervin, off a feed from senior James Espoito, scored the first bucket of the second half to make it 30-26, but CV scored the next four points to tie the game at 30.

After ties at 32, 34, and 36, Moore canned a 3-pointer and Esposito scored on a putback on the offensive boards to give the Redskins a 41-36 lead midway through the third quarter.

After a CV free throw, junior Ethan Miller, off an assist from Brown, scored to give Sayre a 43-37 lead, but the Indians closed the third quarter with a 5-1 spurt to close the gap to 44-42 entering the final eight minutes.

Junior Zach Watkins and Brown scored back-to-back buckets to give Sayre a 48-42 lead with 6 1/2 minutes remaining in the game, but the Indians battled back to take a 52-50 lead with 1:45 remaining in the contest.

Sayre rallied to take a 54-52 lead on a pair of free throws, sandwiched around a bucket by Moore, but the Indians forced overtime with its work on the offensive glass.

CV scored off the overtime tip-off to take a 56-54 lead, but Brown and Moore connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to give Sayre a 60-56 lead.

Sayre made 3 of 6 free-throws in the final minute to take its biggest lead of the game - at 63-56, before CV knocked down a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to provide the final margin.

Moore, who drained five 3-pointers, led Sayre with 19 points, while Brown had 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals, and Carnrike had 10 points, five rebounds, four steals, and two blocked shots.

Watkins had five points, six rebounds, and three steals in the win, while Esposito had five points and four rebounds, Miller added five points, and Ervin chipped in with four points, four rebounds, three steals, and one block.

Sayre, now 4-8, returns to action Saturday evening at Canton - weather permitting.
