WAVERLY - Cortland took the early lead and pulled away en route to a 50-37 win over Waverly here Saturday evening in non-league junior varsity boys basketball action.
The junior Purple Dragons led 15-10 after the first eight minutes, then used a 12-5 second-quarter run to extend its lead to 27-15 at the half. Waverly shot just 18 percent (4 of 22) from the field in the first half.
Cortland pumped in 20 points in the third quarter to stretch its advantage to 20 points, at 47-27, entering the final eight minutes.
Davis Croft led Waverly with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Joey Tomasso had seven points and four rebounds, Nalen Carling added five points and five rebounds, Liam Traub chipped in with four points and six boards, and Brennan Traub grabbed five rebounds.
"With everything our program endured this past season with injuries, and kids pulled up to varsity, I am very proud of what were able to accomplish," said Waverly coach Michael Croft.
"We have one sophomore, eight freshmen, and one 7th-grader on our roster, and they played their hearts all season. They never gave up.
"Sometimes you can't just look at win-loss record and judge how successful the season was - such is the case here," added Croft.
Waverly wraps up the 2018-19 campaign with a 12-7 record.
