NTL JV BOYS BASKETBALL: SAYRE KNOCKS OFF COWANESQUE VALLEY, 58-46 (2019-02-14)

WESTFIELD, Pa. - Zach Belles and Brayden Horton scored four points apiece in an 8-0 spurt to give Sayre the lead for good late in the second quarter en route to a 58-46 win over Cowanesque Valley here Wednesday evening in NTL junior varsity boys basketball action.

Horton knocked down a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, and Belles added a bucket and a free throw in the next 90 seconds to give Sayre a 6-0 lead.

Cowanesque Valley trimmed the deficit to 8-7 at the end of the first quarter, and eventually took their first lead at 17-15 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half.

With CV leading 19-17, Belles scored off a feed from Dom Fabbri to tie the game, and Horton scored on offensive rebound to give the junior Redskins the lead for good at 21-19.

Horton scored again moments later, off an assist from Fabbri, and Belles capped the 8-0 spurt, off a feed from Horton, to make it 25-19

CV closed the game to 27-25 with 7 minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Belles, off a feed from Horton, triggered a 12-0 run with a bucket in the low blocks.

Belles scored four more points in the spurt, and Donnie Abrams added four points as Sayre stretched its lead to 39-25 midway through the third quarter.

CV again cut into the lead, and trailed 42-33 heading into the final eight minutes, but Sayre score the first eight points of the fourth quarter, including four points by David Northrup, to take a 50-33 lead.

The closes CV would get in the final 6 minutes was nine points, at 50-41.

Belles led Sayre with 17 points and five rebounds, while Horton had nine points, five rebounds and three assists, and Jia Huang added seven points.

Northrup had six points and five rebounds in the win, while Abrams had six points and three rebounds, Dylan Watkins chipped in with five points, Josh Arnold had four points, and Fabbri doled out five assists.

Sayre closes out its 2018-19 season Thursday at Montgomery.
