NEW YORK STATE DIVISION II WRESTLING: QUARTERFINALS UNDERWAY (2019-02-22)

Tim Birney and Tim Taylor here at the Times-Union Center in Albany for the New York State Division II wrestling championships. We'll provide updates as often as possible, as well as an observation here and there. (Pardon any typos.)

Consolation Bracket -- Section IV has five alive in the consolation bracket.

(9 p.m.) At 99 pounds: BGAH 8th-grader Joey Florence was 0-2 on the day, losing by fall to Gouverneur's Trayton Tupper via fall in 4:57 in the opening round of wrestlebacks. Florence led 4-2 at the time of the fall.

At 113 pounds: Walton-Delhi sopjomore Cody Merwin forged an 8-3 decision over Saranca's Landon Smith in the second round of wrestlebacks.

At 138 pounds: Chenango Valley senior Nathan Lehr, who started the bout down 1-0 after being penalized for tape on his head gear, scored a fall over Oyster Bay's Mike Leandrou in 1:54.

Lehr's career ended in the second of wrestlebacks after losing by fall to Onteora's Nick Ross in 1:31.

At 152 pounds: Groton senior Reese Lockwood, who won his opening-round match, dropped a 7-3 decision to Clarke's Austin Carman in the second round of wrestlebacks.

At 160 pounds: Chenango Valley's Brady Hope forged a 7-1 win over Falconer's Nick Seager in the first round of wrestlebacks, then dropped a 3-1 decision to Section IV rival BGAH senior Shane Hoover.

At 170 pounds: Owego sophomore Cam Bundy, who won an opening-round match, forged an 8-1 decision over Mattituck's Ethan Schmidt in the second round of wrestlebacks.

At 182 pounds: SVEC senior Mark Mullen fell behind 4-0 after the first period, then threw John Glenn's Justin Vega to his back for a pin at 1:23 in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Mullen squared off with Section IV rival Mitch Knapp in the second round. Knapp scored a takedown with 16 seconds left to tie the bout at 4-4, but Mullen registered an escape near the edge of the circle with 6 seconds left for a 5-4.

Mullen was called for stalling - his second offense - at the buzzer, and Knapp scored a takedown in overtime for a 7-5 win.

At 195 pounds, SVEC senior Dell Davis, a basketball player two years ago, saw his storybook season come to an end via fall in 2:46 to Whitehall's Covery Whitehall in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Oxford-Greene;s Noah Kennedy, the seventh seed, forged a 5-2 decision over Covey in the second round of wrestlebacks.

At 220 pounds, Oneonta's Richie Serafin, the seventh seed, won a 7-3 decision in the pig-tail round of the consolation bracket, then lost via second-period fall to Warrensburg's Chris Wilson in his next bout.

QUARTERFINALS - Section IV posts 12-6 record in quarterfinals - sends 12 to semifinals.

(8:30 p.m.) Due to technical difficulties, and obligations to our local coverage we fell a bit behind.

The remainder of the quarterfinals went as follows:

Susquehanna Valley 182-pounder Mitchell Knapp dropped an 11-1 major decision to unbeaten Cody York (42-0) of Luzerne.

Oxford-Greene's Noah Kennedy, the seventh-seed at 195 pounds lost via fall  in 3:06 to second-seed Nate DeGroff (50-3) of Warsaw.

In the 285-pound division, three Section IV wrestlers advanced to the semifinals.

Top-seed Trentyn Rupert (35-2) of Newark Valley advanced to the semis with an 8-1 decision over eighth-seed Jake Rankin of Oyster Bay.

Tioga's Steven Taylor (32-6), the fourth seed, forged a 4-1 decision over George Lebberes of Ardsley, and will face Rupert in the semifinals tomorrow morning.

Second-seed Dylan Houseknecht (38-2) of O-M / Watkins Glen recorded his second fall of the day, pinning unseeded Mike Leibl of Canastota in 5:13.

(4:05 p.m.) Owego's Cam Bundy is matched up against multiple-time state qualifier Sam Wolf of Warsaw in the quarterfinals.

Wolf scored a takedown and two near-fall points in the first period, then rode out the most of the remainder of the period until Bundy scored an escape to make it 4-1.

Bundy scored a quick escape off the second-period whistle, but Wolf asnwered with a takedown at 1:01 for a 6-2 lead, which he carried into the third period.

Wolf padded his lead 30 seconds into the third period with another takedown for an 8-2 advantage.

Bundy escaped with 1:10 remaining, but Wolf answered moments later with a takedown for a 10-3 lead.

After cutting Bundy loose, Wolf registered another takedown with 20 seconds remaining for a 12-4 major decision over the Owego junior.

(3:42) Norwich's Mikey Squires picks up a takedown and two near fall points for a 4-0 first-period lead over Groton's Reese Lockwood in a battle of Section IV foes.

Lockwood gets an escape, but Squires opens second period with a low single for a 6-1 lead. Lockwood makes it 6-2 with another escape.

Squires escapes to make it a 7-2 final.

(3:32)  Tioga's Austin Lamb, the third seed at 145, gets the takedown over Cold Spring Harbor's sixth seeded Ray Costa, but Costs score a late escape to make it 2-1 after one period.

Lamb slips an underhook from behind for an escape, going up 3-1 in the second.

Costa picks up an escape in the third, closes within 3-2.

Lamb hangs on for 3-2 win.

(3:17 p.m.) Tioga's second-seeded John Worthing surrenders a takedown to Onteora's unseeded Nick Ross, but earns an escape and uses a single leg takedown to grab a 3-2 edge.

Worthing adds an escape and takedown for a 6-2 lead, then a stalling point to go up, 7-2.

He starts off the third period with an escape, then a takedown and turns Ross to his back to finish with a 13-2 victory.

(3:17 p.m.) BGAH's third-seeded Brody Oleksak and Warsaw's unseeded Nathan Murphy are scoreless after one period.

Oleksak scores a reversal and pin in 3:33.

(3:11 p.m.) Tioga's Brady Worthing scores a takedown, but can't turn Pal-Mac's Ethan Ferro with a bar an writs, leads 2-0, after one.

Worthing does expose his foe's back early in the second period for a 4-0 advantage.

Ferro works an escape, but Worthing takes him to his back for a fall in 3:33.

(2:52 p.m.) Groton's Kyle Willard and East Aurora's Alex Skonrowski -  a pair of unseeded wrestlers at 113 pounds -- put on quite a show.

Skonrowski scored the initial takedown for a 2-0 lead after the first period. Willard opened the second period with a quick switch to tie the bout, then the duo traded reversals and the bout was tied 4-4 heading into the third period.

Willard scored three points on a tilt early in the third period for a 7-4. Skonrowski managed a reversal late, then cut Williard, but couldn't muster a takedown. Willard wins 8-6.

(2:40 p.m.) Walton-Delhi's Cody Merwin is a bit over-matched against two-time state champ Anthony Noto of Honeoye Falls-Lima.

Noto led 5-1 after the first period, and 10-2 after the second period.

Noto scores a takedown with 55 seconds left in the match to take a 12-2 lead. An escape by Merwin, and another Noto takedown make the final score 14-3.

(2:31 p.m.) Defending state champ Dante Geislinger, the top seed at 106, led 4-0 before pinning Honeoye Falls-Lima's Nicholas Noto at 3:52 to advance to Saturday morning's semifinals.

END OF OPENING ROUND (Section IV wrestlers finish with 18-6 record.)
(2:30 p.m.) O-M's Dylan Houseknecht, the second seed at 285 pounds, scored a first-period takedown for a 2-0 lead.

He increased his lead to 5-0 with a second-period escape and takedown, before pinning Logan Garrison of Gouverneur in 3:35.

(2:21 p.m.) Newark Valley senior Trentyn Rupert (33-2), the top seed at 285 pounds scored a takedown midway through the first period for a 2-0 lead on Taerloo's Jake Dewall (35-1) and rode him out ffor the final 68 seconds.

Rupert scored a reversal 24 seconds into the second period for a 4-0 lead, and rode out the remainder of the period.

After being awarded a penalty point for stalling, Rupert was in turn banged for stalling with 51 seconds left in the third period, and leads 5-1.

Rupert rides out final 51 seconds for 5-1 win.

(2:14 p.m.) Tioga senior Steven Taylor (30-6), the fourth seed at 285 pounds, weathered an aggressive start RCS' Christia Salvio (31-3) and kept the match up right for the first two minutes.

Taylor started the second period, scored three near-fall points after coming out on top of a bit of scramble, then locked in arm bar at 3:26 for the fall.

(2 p.m.) Oneonta's Richie Serafin (39-4), the seventh seed at 220 pounds, scored a takedown and had Cam Coleman (15-5) in a half-nelson for near-fall points, but Coleman rolled through and pinned Serafin with 39 seconds left in the first period.

(1:47 p.m.) Oxford-Greene's Noah Kennedy, the seventh seed at 195 pounds, built a 7-0 lad before recording a fall over Gouverneur's Nick Jenkins at 3:39.

(1:46 p.m.) After an extended stoppage to work on Davis' head gear, the SVEC senior switches to a new piece of equipment.

The match resumes with Davis on bottom to start third period. Davis gets to his feet, but Young pushed him OB.  Davis quickly to his feet for an escape at 1:44 to trim deficit to 3-1.

Young wins another scramble midway through the third period for a takedown and a 5-1 lead. Another quick escape for Davis, cuts deficit to 5-2.

The final 50 seconds are spent on their feet. Young wins 5-2.

(1:41 p.m.) SVEC's Dell Davis (27-6), the eighth seed at 195 pounds, is on the mat with Akron's Millard Young (28-4). The duo spends the entire first two minutes on their feet and are tied 0-0 heading to the second.

Davis won the toss and deferred. Young chooses bottom and Davis chooses to start neutral. Young leads 1-0 as second period begins.

Young wins a scramble and foils Davis headlock attempt for a takedown with 15 seconds left in the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the third period.

(1:34 p.m.) SVEC's Mark Mullen is down 5-0 to third seed Edgemont's Nicholas Meglino, who scored a quick takedown, then tilted him for three near-fall points. Mullen was penalized for a point for stalling late in the first period and trails, 6-0.

The duo start the second period on their feet. Meglino scores a takedown midway through and leads 8-0.

After a brief injury timeout for Meglino, he rides Mullen out for the final 56 seconds and takes an 8-0 lead into the final two minutes.

They again start on their feet in the third period. Meglino gets in deep about 30 seconds in, and takes Mullen directly to his back near the edge of the circle for a 13-0 lead midway through the final period.

Meglino working the arm bar and turns Mullen for two near-fall points and 15-0 technical fall at 5:31.

(1:22 p.m.) Susquehanna Valley's Mitchell Knapp, he fifth seed at 182 pounds, turned in a strong opening-round performance with a 11-7  decision.

Knapp led 4-0 after the first period on a takedown and two back points. After an escape early in the second period, he scored a five-point move for a 10-0 lead.

Leading 11-2 late, Knapp gave up a five-point move in the final seconds, but prevailed, 11-7.

(1:12 p.m.) Owego's Cam Bundy nearly misses a takedown early in the first period, then finally finishes off one with 9 seconds remaining for a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Bundy starts second period on bottom against Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy Fabio Preka, and registers an escape with 1:30 left.

Bundy gets in on a leg, but can't finish it off with 33 seconds left. Preka warned for stalling. Second period ends with Bundy up 3-0.

Bundy begins third period on top. He is controlling the action through the first minute. Preka banged a point for stalling, so Bundy leads 5-0 with 1:09 remaining.

Preka escapes with 26 seconds remaining, but Bundy gets in on a leg and is able to run out the final 15 seconds for a 5-1 win.

(12:57) BGAH's Shane Hoover picks up a pair of takedowns for a 4-1 lead over Stephen Andryc of Trinity after one period.

Hoover adds an escape and  takedown in the second period, then runs a bar to a half nelson for a fall in 3:35.

Section IV improves to 12-3.

(12:47) Dolgeville's top-seeded Jacob Null pins Chenango Valley's Brady Hope in 44 seconds.

Section IV slips to 11-3.

(12:41) Norwich's Mikey Squires avoids a near-disaster in the opening minute, hanging on to the foot to avoid a 5-point move.

Squires grabs a 4-0 lead and scores a pin in 2:45.

Section IV is now 11-2.

(12:30) Canisteo-Greenwood's Jonathen Davis gets a quick ankle pick on Groton's Reese Lockwood for a 2-0 lead. Reese rallied for 3-2 lead after one.

Reese picks up a pair of near falls for 8-0 lead, then wins, 8-3.

The victory was Section IV's 10th of the day (10-2).

(12:12 p.m.) Tioga's Austin Lamb gets the takedown for a 2-0 lead after one period.

Lamb gets a quick escape in the second, 3-0 now.

He adds another takedown for a 5-0 lead.

Putnam Valley / Haldane's Will Carano scores an escape, third period will start with Lamb up, 5-1.

Lamb chalks up his third takedown of the bout for a 7-1 lead.

Carano picks up a point, but Lamb prevails, 7-2.

Tim Taylor: Lamb dominated on their feet.

Section IV is 9-2.

Tim Taylor: Like his younger brother, John Worthing got after it. The W brothers aren't messing around in Albany.

(12:01 p.m.) Tioga's John Worthing with a quick takedown, up 2-0. Tack on back points and it's 4-0. Add three more near fall points, 7-0 after one period.

Two more near fall points, 9-0, now three more via arm bar and Worthing is up, 12-0. Another near fall gives Worthing a 14-0 advantage heading into the third period.

Worthing ends the match in 4:21 with a takedown for a 16-0 tech fall.

Section IV has won 8 of its first 10 bouts in the first round.

Next up for the Southern Tier stars is Tioga's Austin Lamb at 145.

(11:45 a.m.) Top-seeded Zach Braddell of Tonawanda scores a late takedown on Chenango Valley's Nathan Lehr for a 2-0 lead after the first two minutes at 138 pounds.

Braddell escapes to go up 3-0 in second period - and that's how the match ends.

Section IV is now 6-2.

Next up: BGAH's Brody Oleksak, followed by Tioga's John Worthing.

(11:30 a.m.) Tioga's Brady Worthing locks up a near cradle on Gouverneur's Joseph McIntosh for a 5-0 lead before they go out of bounds.

With a trio of tilts, Worthing builds a 11-0 cushion after one period.

An escape, takedown and near fall gives Worthing a 16-0 technical fall in the second period.

Tim Taylor: Brady got after it and showed why he is a returning finalist.

Section IV is now 6-1 on the day, having won six consecutive bouts.

(11:16 a.m.) Section IV is now 5-1 after Walton-Delhi's Robinson and Merwin score falls just seconds apart in real time.

Next up is Tioga's Brady Worthing at 132 pounds.

(11:15 a.m.) Walton-Delhi's Chandler Merwin scores a takedown just 12 seconds into his bout, then locks in cradle for three back points. He leads Hackley's Tyler Wyman 5-0.

Chandler gets three near-fall points with a tilt and leads 8-0 with 39 seconds left.

Chandler registers three more near-fall points at first-period buzzer and leads 11-0.

Walton-Delhi's Caleb Robinson scores takedown midway through first period and has Malone's Nathan Roscoe flat for fall at 1:32.

Merwin chooses neutral. He scores quick takedown and and has Wyman on his back. He works for the fall at 2:46.

Section IV is off to a 3-1 start on the day. Next up Walton-Dehli's Caleb Robinson at 120, and Chandler Merwin at 126.

( 11 a.m.) Tim Birney: It's nice to see Willard get to States via the wildcard, and to get a win. He's been on the periphery in his weight class for a couple of years. ... Ditto for Chenango Valley's Nathan Lehr and Brady Hope. Would be nice to see them get a win or two here this weekend.

(10:55 a.m.) Check that, Willard match resuming. Apparently, Willard's knee touched was out of the circle (as called by side judge). Willard leads 10-5 when action resumes, and scores three more near-fall points at buzzer for 13-5 lead entering final two minutes.

Willard warned for stalling with 15 seconds remaining. Willard gets the 15-5 major decision over the fifth seed.

A big win for Willard.

(10:51 a.m.) Willard scores an escape 30 seconds into second period, and Winchell is warned for stalling after backing out of circle moments later.

Willard scores a takedown with 53 seconds remaining, then registers the fall at 3:23.

A big upset for Willard. Winchell is the fifth seed at 113 pounds.

Merwin scores an escape to take a 4-3 lead with 39 seconds left in his bout. Merwin scores a takedown with 2 seconds remaining to secure 6-3 win. Merwin trailed 3-2 entering period, but saw match tied with stalling point with 45 seconds remaining.

(10:46 a.m.) Walton-Delhi's Cody Merwin (38-3) is on the mat at 113 pounds against Petrides' Brandon Fallon.

Fallon scores a takedown with 46 seconds left in the first period, and rides Merwin out for the remainder of the first period.

Merwin starts on top in second period. Fallon scores an escape, but Merwin gets a takedown to cut deficit to 3-2 at end of second period.

Groton's Kyle Willard (36-5) on Mat 1 against Warrensburg's Dylan Winchell.

Winchell scores a quick takedown, but Willard avoids backpoints from a near-side cradle, and trails 2-0.

Winchell registers a pair of back points for a 4-0 lead, but Willard's reversal trims deficit to 4-2. Winchell scores escape late in first period for 5-2 lead.


(10:30 a.m.) Gallagher leads 4-1 after two periods, thanks to a pair of takedowns.

Florence starts third period on top. Florence is penalized for locked hands, but Gallagher is able to complete the switch for a reversal and a 7-1 lead midway through third period.

Gallagher rides out final 56 seconds for 7-1 win over BGAH's Joey Forence at 99 pounds.

(10:24 a.m.) Geislinger scored reversal off second-period whistle, and then the pin at 2:46.

(10:23 a.m.) BGAH's Joey Florence on the mat now ... as is Norwich's Dante Geislinger, a defending state champion.

Gallagher scores a takedown of Florence midway through the first period. Match stopped to due blood time for Gallagher.

Geislinger registers a takedown in the opening 10 seconds on Watervliet's Peyton White, who escaped midway through the period. Geislinger scores another takedown for a 4-1 lead after first period.

(10:08 a.m.) The opening-round opponent for Tioga's John Worthing was determined in one of the first matches of the day. Eagle Academy's Hector Rodriguez improves to 27-7 on the season with a 7-1 win over Michael Leandrou (27-4) of Oyster Bay.

He will face Worthing, the second seed, in the opening-round of the 138-pound bracket.

(9:50 a.m.)  The action begins at 10 a.m. with the pigtail-round matches.

The first Section IV wrestler to hit the mats will be BGAH 99-pounder Joey Florence (31-5), who will face fifth-seed Max Gallagher (32-3) of Bayport-Blue Point.
