YOUTH WRESTLING: WAVERLY YOUTH WRESTLING CLUB CROWNS FOUR CHAMPS AT STATE QUALIFIER - ADVANCES 20 TO NYWAY STATES (2019-03-03)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER - The Waverly Youth Wrestling Club crowned four champions and advanced 20 grapplers to States here this weekend at the Southern Tier NYWAY State Qualifier.
The champions were: Jax Myers, D3-76 pounds, Brayden Bowman, D2-68 pounds,, Mason Phillips, D1-38 pounds, and Isaac Peppard, D4-50 pounds.
"Brayden Bowman and Mason Phillips were both dominant throughout the day and have great shots at winning NYWAY States," said Waverly coach Justin Wolcott.
Waverly also had a foursome of runners-up in Roark Ward, D2-54, Bryce Stanton, D1-41, Carter Stanton, D6-70, and Malakaih Pittman, D4-71.
Waverly had six third-place finishers, including Eli Keeney, D2-50, whose only loss was an 11-9 decision in overtime. He ended up in a three-way tie for first, but finished third due to tiebreaker criteria.
Also finishing third were Maddex Presher, D4-59, Rhylee Stotler, D5-58, Avery Bowman, D4-63, Todd LaForest, D5-66, and Jeremy Cleveland, D4-71.
Other qualifiers were Jase Stark, Leiland Stark, Derek Thorp, Nico Rae and Joey Mack.
"I'm looking forward to a good showing at States, and hopefully bringing home a few place-winners," said Wolcott.
NYWAY States in Brockport this weekend - Friday through Sunday.
NOTES: Jax Myers won his championship in an OT thriller, 3-2. ... Isaac Peppard won his championship match, 3-0. ... Avery Bowman lost to matches to NYWAY State place-winners - to Nate Miller, 4-1, and to Landon Boccasini, 6-4. ... Joey Mack won his "blood round" match by pin with 11 remaining in the third period.. He was winning 6-4 at the time.
