VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S WORTHINGS SHARE BOYS 'ATHLETE OF THE WINTER' SEASON HONORS (2019-03-24)

THE VALLEY - Junior Brady Worthing and senior John Worthing, who won New York State wrestling titles 15 minutes apart, became the first Tioga teammates in 20 years, and the first brothers in program history to win state titles. The duo also shares Valley Sports Report's 2018-19 Boys "Athletes of the Winter" season honors.

Brady Worthing, a junior, posted a 40-4 record this season, while senior John Worthing was 39-3.

Brady Worthing avenged a loss in last year's 126-pound state finals with a 7-3 win over two-time state champion Trent Svingala, who had won 128 consecutive matches. Brady Worthing went on to win the 132-pound state title with a 5-1 decision over Victor Perlleshi.

John Worthing avenged a loss in this year's Section IV finals with a 3-0 win over BGAH's Brody Oleksak in the state semifinals. He went on to win the 138-pound title with a 4-2 decision over Zach Braddell.

John Worthing, who has committed to wrestle at Division I Clarion University, will graduate with a 206-32 record and three top-three state place-finishes, while Brady Worthing is now 131-33 with two top-two state place-finishes.

The Worthing brothers also shared VSR "Wrestler of the Year" honors.

Josh McClelland, senior, Sayre: McClelland returned to the PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships, and this time brought home state hardware.

McClelland won a bronze medal in the 50-yard freestyle at the PIAA Championships in a time of the 21.39 seconds. McClelland swam a school-record time of 21.31 seconds earlier in the day in a "swim-off" to reach the finals. He also finished 20th in the State in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.84 seconds.

McClelland won District 4 gold in the 50 free, and a silver medal in 100 free.

During the regular season, McClelland was a double-winner at the rugged Williamsport Coaches Invite, winning the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. He finished second in the 200-yard freestyle at the Waverly Invite.

McClelland shared VSR "Swimmer of the Year" honors with Waverly junior Mike Atanasoff.

Mike Atanasoff, junior, Waverly: Atanasoff led Waverly to its third straight regular-season IAC title, and to a Section IV, Class C team championships.

Atanasoff finished seventh in the 50 free at the New York State Championships in a time of 21.61 seconds. He swam a school record time of 21.53 in the preliminaries.

He also finished 12th at States in 100 free in a time of 48.03 seconds. In the prelims, he swam a school and IAC record time of 47.82 seconds.

Atanasoff was also the MVP at the Waverly Invite, breaking the school, pool, and meet record in the 50 free, and the pool and meet record in the 100 free. He also swam fastest time on Wolverines in 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.12), and 200-yard IM (2:09.05) this season.

Atanasoff shared VSR "Swimmer of the Year" honors with Sayre senior Josh McClelland.

Isaac Chandler, junior, Waverly:
Chandler enjoyed a stellar indoor track & field campaign, setting a school record, and qualifying for States in two events - the pole vault and 55-meter hurdles. He had several first-place finishes in both events.

Chandler finished fifth in the pole vault at the New York State Championships, tying his own school record of 14-feet, 6-inches. He vaulted 14-6 in each of his last three meets. He also finished 26th in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.08 seconds.

David Galasso, senior, Athens: Galasso capped a stellar career at Athens with a 38-7 record and a fourth-place finish at 170 pounds at the PIAA Class AA Championships. His final win at States was also the 100th win of his career.

Galasso won the North Section Tournament and the PIAA Northeast Regionals, sandwiched around a second-place finish at the District 4 Championships.

Austin Lamb, senior, Tioga:
Lamb put the finishing touches on a brilliant career with his third state medal, a fourth-place finish at 145 pounds. He finished sixth at States as a sophomore, and fifth as a junior.

Lamb also won his second Section IV title, and his first title at the rugged Windsor Christmas Tournament. He finished his senior season with a 45-3 record, and a 206-47 career mark.
