NTL BASEBALL: ATHENS TOPS WYALUSING, 11-7 — RUNS RECORD TO 7-0 (2019-04-16)

WELLSBORO "” Unbeaten Athens took the lead early and never relinquished it in an 11-7 win over Wellsboro here Tuesday afternoon in NTL Large School Division baseball action.

Junior Keegan Rude led off the top of the second inning with a single, and senior Nick Watkins followed with a single that moved courtesy-runner Tanner Dildine to third base.

After a walk to junior Joel Maslin loaded the bases, junior Brady Smith singled home a run.

The Wildcats made it 2-0 on an error, and senior Kaden Rude capped the inning with a squeeze bunt to score Smith to extend the lead to 3-0.

Wellsboro answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the second to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Athens scored three more runs in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Senior Nate Kennedy led off the frame with a double and scored on anerror. With one out, Maslin and Smith delivered back-to-back RBI singles to cap the scoring.

The Wildcats tacked on a run in the top of the fourth to make it 7-2, but the Green Hornets trimmed the lead to 7-5 with three runs in the fifth inning.

The Wildcats, however, took firm control of the game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Kaden Rude led off the frame with a single, and senior Ethan Witherow worked a walk. With two outs, Keegan Rude walked to loaded the bases.

Athens scored it first run on an error off the bat of Watkins, then Maslin delivered the key blow - a three-run double to center field to make it 11-5.

Wellsboro scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to provide the final margin.

Maslin doubled and singled, scored one run, and had four RBI, while Kennedy rapped a pair of doubles and scored one run, Smith singled twice, scored one run, and drove in two runs, and Keegan Rude doubled and singled, and drove in a run to lead Athens' 12-hit attack.

Kaden Rude singled, scored one run, and drove in a run for the Wildcats, while Witherow and Watkins each singled and scored two runs, junior Chase Minnick singled, and Dildine crossed the plate three times.

Keegan Rude earned the win for Athens. He allowed six runs - all unearned - on three hits, while striking out six and walking five.

Minnick allowed one run on one hit, while striking out two and walking one in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Athens, now 7-0, returns to action Wednesday at Wyalusing.
