WAVERLY — Jake VanHouten turned in a masterful 5 1/3 inning performance on the mound to lead Waverly to a 7-0 win over Elmira Heights here Monday evening in consolation bracket action in the District 6 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.

VanHouten allowed just two hits, while striking out 14 and walking just one to earn the win. Bryce Bailey returned the only two batters he faced to close out the game.

VanHouten helped his own cause in the first inning with a groundball to knock home Bailey, who led off with a double off the left-center field wall and moved to third on a wild pitch, with the game’s first run.

Joey Tomasso then gave Waverly all the cushion it would need with a two-run blast to dead center field to make it 3-0.

Kaden Wheeler doubled to lead off the bottom of the third inning, moved to third on a single by Brady Blauvelt, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

A one-out RBI double by Tomasso in the fourth inning extended the lead to 5-0. Tomasso later stole home to make it 6-0.

VanHouten put the finishing touches on the with with an RBI single to score Damien McConnell in the fifth inning.

Tomasso homered and doubled, scored two runs, and had three RBI to lead Waverly at the plate, while Bailey doubled and singled, and scored two runs, Wheeler doubled and singled, and scored one run, and Blauvelt singled twice.

VanHouten singled, scored one run, and had two RBI in the win, while McConnell singled and scored a run, and Brayden Talada, Jay Pipher, and Isaiah Bretz each singled.

Waverly returns to action Wednesday when it hosts the winner of Monday’s game between Hornell and Painted Post.
