IAC GIRLS GOLF: TOMASSO BREAKS LEAGUE RECORD; WAVERLY WINS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE TITLE (12 PHOTOS) (2019-05-17)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY "” There's dominance, then there's Waverly girls golf.

The Lady Wolverines won their fourth consecutive league title here Friday at Tomasso's Golf Course, tallying a four-player aggregate stroke count of 357, and topping runner-up Moravia by 137 strokes.

Waverly senior Alex Tomasso earned low-medal honors at the IACs for the fourth time in her career with a league-record round of 81, and the Lady Wolverines claimed the top five spots in the individual standings.

Waverly did it despite tough conditions on its home course.

"We've had so much rain, there were parts of the course there were very difficult because they couldn't mow," said Waverly coach Pete Girolamo. "We didn't score as well as I think we could have, but the course effected everyone today.

"There was some tough putting out there," noted Girolamo. "Some of the greens have dried out more than others, so some were faster than others. It usually doesn't happen that way because you mow them all at the same time, so they're usually similar speeds.

"We had a lot of three-putts, which is something we normally don't do," added Girolamo. "But, we played pretty good overall. I'm happy for the girls, and very proud."

Alex Tomasso shot a 42 on the front nine, and a 39 on the back nine to better the previous league record of 83, which she shared with Waverly grad and former teammate Capria Picco.

"Alex (Tomasso) didn't play all that well on the front. She shot a 42, but she didn't hit it that well," said Girolamo. "Her timing was off a little bit.

"At the turn we talked with her, and she it much better on the back nine," he noted. "She played good, but she didn't play at the level we've become accustom to.

"It shows you how good she is, that she won and set a new league record, and didn't play her best," added Girolamo.

Junior Gianna Picco fired an 88 (46-42) to finish second, while sophomore Sidney Tomasso shot a 90 (47-43) to take third place, and sophomore Gabby Picco shot matching 49s for a round 98 and a fourth-place finish.

"Gianna played great," said Girolamo. "After the front nine, she was tied with Alex for first place."

Sophomore Haley Kittle shot a non-scoring round of 99 (50-49) to finish fifth, and senior Lauren Newman tacked on a non-scoring round 139 (71-68).

"Haley (Kittle) had never broke 50, and she shot a 49 on the back nine," said Girolamo. "She had a really good day."

Moravia finished second with 494 strokes, while Lansing was third at 503, and S-VE was fourth at 586. There were also golfers from Newark Valley and Marathon competing, but neither school had a full team.

Lansing's Hannah Lacko and Marathon's Olivia Lisi tied for sixth with rounds of 114.

Lindsey Smith led Moravia with a 115, and Kyleigh VanSlyke added a 122, while Hannah Clark led Newark Valley with a 128, and Theresa Maki led S-VE with a 145.

Waverly returns to action Tuesday at Soaring Eagles, seeking its fourth straight Section IV championship.
