NTL BASEBALL: SAYRE'S LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 4-3 LOSS TO WELLSBORO (19 PHOTOS) (2024-04-28)

Valley Sports Report
SAYRE — Sayre had runners all over the bases in the final two innings, but their late rally came up just short in a 4-3 loss to Wellsboro in a rare Sunday afternoon game here at Riverfront Park.

“The team played a tough game offensively and defensively all seven innings,” said Sayre coach Todd Green.

“We left 10 on the bases today, and that is what got us in the end,” noted Green.

“Wellsboro played a tough game, and we were right there in it the whole way … a couple key plays, and it would of have been a different outcome,” added Green. “The team showed they can play with minimal errors. Now, we just gotta get the rest of it to sync together.”

Sayre took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Without one out, senior Tanner Green, and ended up on third moments later on a double by senior Jon Apgar.

With two outs, sophomore Ryne Osmond singled to left to give the Redskins a 1-0 lead.

The Redskins maintained a 1-0 lead until the Hornets plated three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning.

Wellsboro turned three singles into a run, and a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore Karter Green led off the home half of the inning with a single, Tanner Green walked, and Apgar lined a single into left filed to load the bases.

Senior Kaden Bennett lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive home Karter Green, and close the gap to 4-2.

Osmond lined a single into right field to re-load the bases, but the Redskins left the bases juiced.

After Karter Green, who pitched a complete game for the Redskins, retired the Hornets in order in the top of the seventh inning, including a pair of strikeouts to end the inning, Sayre went back to work in the home half of the inning.

Freshman Shaine Strickland and senior Will Crossett led of the inning with consecutive singles to put runners on first and third.

With two outs, Strickland scampered home on a wild pitch that advanced Crossett to third base.

However, the next batter struck out to end the game.

Osmond led Sayre with two hits and one RBI, and Apgar doubled and singled to pace Sayre’s eight-hit attack, while Karter Green, and Strickland each singled and scored, and Bennett singled and drove in a run.

Crossett added a single for the Redskins, and Tanner Green scored one run.

Green was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out five and walking two.

“Karter Green got a tough loss today, but a complete game for us to try to pull out a win in the bottom of the seventh,” said Green. “Unfortunately, we left three stranded on the bases.”

Sayre, now 5-6, returns to action Tuesday at NEB.
