SECTION IV WRESTLING: WORTHINGS, LAMB TOP SEEDS AT THIS WEEKEND'S DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIPS (2019-02-06)

Valley Sports Report
WINDSOR - Tioga's John Worthing has some unfinished business. An injury cost him an opportunity at a state championship last season. This year, the senior is healthy again and is expected to win his fourth sectional title when the Section IV Division II Wrestling Championships get underway at Windsor High School Friday evening.

Worthing, who posted his 200th career victory at last week's qualifier and is 33-2 this season, is the top seed at 138 pounds. He won sectional titles at 113 in 2018, and at 99 in 2016 and 2017. He was the state runner-up in 2016 and placed third 2017.

He is one of three Tigers who have earned the top spot for sectionals. Younger brother Brady is the favorite at 132 and Austin Lamb is seeded first at 145.

Lamb, a senior, is 38-1 and won a sectional title at 120 in 2017 and was the runner-up at 138 last year. He placed fifth at state in 2018 and took sixth in 2017.

A junior, Brady Worthing is 32-4, was second at sectionals at 120 last year and went on to become the state runner-up as well.

Tioga has two other wrestlers seeded to reach Saturday evening's championship finals. Seventh-grader Caden Bellis (25-8) is seeded second behind BGAH's Joey Florence (28-5) at 99 and junior David MacWhinnie is the No. 2 seed behind Chandler Merwin (35-5) of Walton / Delhi. MacWhinnie placed third at sectionals last year and was fourth in 2017.

Waverly has one second seed in Ethan Stotler (34-5) at 145. The junior placed third in the section in 2018 and was fourth in 2017.

Seeded third is Tioga 7th-grader Gianni Silvestri (24-14) at 99.

Fourth seeds include the Tigers' Mason Welch (29-13) at 113, Zac Warner (28-7) at 160 and heavyweight Stephen Taylor (26-5), and Waverly's Garrett Skeens (23-16) at 120. A senior, Taylor placed third at sectionals in 2017 and 2018 and went on to finish sixth at 285 at the state tournament last year. Welch, a freshman, and Warner, a senior, took fifth and sixth, respectively, at sectionals last year.

Wolverine senior Colby Sindoni (18-9) and 8th-grader Gage Tedesco (7-9) are seeded sixth at 126 and 182, respectively. Tioga freshman Emmett Wood (20-7), also a sixth seed, placed fourth at sectionals last year.

Tiger sophomore Justin Hopkins (14-13) is seeded seventh at 120 and Waverly sophomore Austin Kimble (19-20) is the eight seed at 152.

Also competing in the tournament are Tioga's Vinny Sullivan at 170, Dom Wood at 182 and Joe Lloyd at 195, and Waverly's Rylan LaForest at 120, Trevor Meyers at 160, Trent Skeens at 220 and Hunter Rando at 285. They are unseeded - Section IV seeds the top eight at each weight and remaining wrestlers are drawn into the brackets.

Tioga is the two-time defending Division II champion.

Wrestling begins Friday at 5 p.m. on four mats with two championship rounds (plus one pigtail match and one pigtail wrestleback match). The action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with wrestlebacks on four mats. The semifinals will begin at 10 a.m. on two mats and the finals will be held on one mat at 5 p.m.

Admission is $12 for an all-session ticket, $8 for single-day all-day ticket and $ for the finals. Senior citizens are $3.00 per session and children under 10 get in free.

Coolers will not be allowed in the building.
