YOUTH FOOTBALL: SAYRE WINS BOTH GAMES AT WELLSBORO IN NTYFL OPENERS (2023-08-31)

WELLSBORO — The Sayre Junior Redskins football teams went on the road to kick off their 2023 Northern Tier Youth Football League campaign and came away with two wins here Sunday.

“A” Division
Sayre 32, Wellsboro 6

Thanks to a strong rushing attack, Sayre topped Wellsboro 32-6, in “A” Division action.

Emmet Lee, behind a  good performance by the offensive line, which controlled the matchup, rushed for more than 100 yards and one touchdown in the opener.

Quarterback James Lincoln added two rushing TDs, while Colton Mathews-Fuller tallied a rushing touchdown and a rushing extra point, and Lyam Morningstar added another TD on the ground.

Trenton Lynch was also involved in the scoring, adding a rushing extra point for the visiting Junior Redskins.

Sayre’s defense was stout in their first game of the year, allowing only one touchdown to the home-standing Hornets. The defensive effort was led by Jacob Woodruff, who registered two sacks and five tackles-for-loss, and Elijah Ross who snagged an interception.

Special teams also played a role in the Junior Redskin victory as Lyam Morningstar added a punt return for a score.

“B” Division
Sayre 27, Wellsboro 0

The Sayre B Squad shut out the Hornets, 27-0, in the season opener. The victory was led by Razier Vanhousen and Attilio Agnellino.
