SECTION IV GIRLS GOLF: WAVERLY COACH LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCE TO CARRY TEAM IN 2024 (2024-03-26)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Waverly returns intact from last season, and coach Sam Cole believes her team, which was among the top five teams in Section IV last year, will be even better in 2024.

“Going into the season there is a certain level of confidence with our team, they have a great bond from the last two to three seasons together,” she said.

“Knowing the players and the courses, coach (Kaylee) Uhl and I know the girls will learn from their rounds last season, and perform even better this year,” added Cole.

State qualifier junior Breanne Robinson returns to lead the Wolverines.

Breanne is a talented golfer,” said Cole. “We are excited to see what this season holds for her.

“Along with her teammates, Bre has been working on her short game, developing a feel around the greens,” added Cole.

Also back this season are senior Natalie Lauper, juniors Lauryn DeLill and Madalyn Farnham, and sophomores Sophia Silieo and Addison Hunt.

“Any of our returning players have the potential to have their moment this season,” said Cole. “These girls know the sport, they know their strengths, they know their weaknesses.

“If they set their minds to it, they could really make some noise this season,” she added.

Cole said the pre-season focus has been minimizing shots around the green.

“Our team has been focusing on the short game — learning technique around the greens, and really focusing on making every shot purposeful,” said Cole.

The Wolverines also added one newcomer this season in freshman Callie Mills-Price.

Callie is new to the sport and the district,” said Cole. “We are excited to have her. We hope to help her develop the skills to become a confident golfer this season.”

With plenty of competition from softball, track, and now flag football, Cole is pleased to have seven on her roster, but is looking to add it in coming years.

“Coach Uhl and I are happy with our numbers, (but) we’d love to get more girls out for the team and grow the love for the sport,” she said.

Waverly opens the 2024 campaign this afternoon at Willowbrook Golf Course.
