ATHENS — Senior Kelley Reid, and sophomore Graham Wanck led Athens to wins over Sayre and Towanda here Monday afternoon in NTL track & field action, while junior Marco Quiros, and sophomore Carter Bleiler notched wins for the Redskins.

Athens tallied 79 points in the tri-meet, while Towanda had 45, and Sayre had 25.

"Overall, we had a great first meet,” said Athens coach Mike Bronson. “The  kids really exceeded our expectations tonight.  They have been working really hard for the last three weeks and the results showed that. 

“Kelley Reid has really taken his running to another level,” he noted. “A lot of our new kids had really strong performances for their first meet and will continue to improve as the season goes on. 

“I think our entire coaching staff is really happy with where we are at this point in the season,” added Bronson. “We'll just keep focusing on working hard and improving from one week to the next."

Reid won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.56 seconds, and Quiros was second in 11.66 seconds.

Reid also won the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.87 seconds, while Quiros was second in 23.98 seconds, Athens junior Peter Jones was third in 24.95 seconds, and Athens senior Jack Ryan was fourth in 25.65 seconds.

Quiros won the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.7 seconds, and Athens sophomore James Friend was third in 58.07 seconds.

Athens senior Sean Clare won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:21.4, while Athens senior Dash Bishop was second in 2:26.67, and Sayre freshman Glen VanBenthuysen was third in 2:27.55.

Wanck won the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:59.29, while Athens freshman Lucas Persun was second in 5:28.91, VanBenthuysen was third in 5:30.04, and Athens freshman Matt Rossettie was fourth in 5:30.06.

Wanck led an Athens sweep of the top three spots in the 3,200-meter run, clocking in at 11:36.56, while Persun was second in 12:03.21, and Rossettie was third in 12:06.04. VanBenthuysen was fourth for Sayre in 12:09.62.

Athens junior Jase Babcock won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-feet, 6-inches, while Friend was third at 5-feet, 2-inches, and Sayre junior Nick Pellicano was fourth at 5-feet.

Bleiler won the pole vault, clearing the bar at 9-feet, and Athens sophomore Chase Ingram was fourth at 7-feet, 6-inches.

Athens senior Davin Spencer led a sweep in the triple jump with a mark of 36-feet, 6-inches, while Friend was second at 35-feet, 11-inches, Jones was third at 34-feet, 11-inches, and Athens junior Lucious Mickley was fourth at 33-feet, 11-inches.

Athens senior Kaden Parrish won the discus with a toss of 114-feet, 9-inches, while Athens sophomore Brenden Comstock was second at 106-feet, 11-inches, and Athens senior Josh Nittinger was third at 106-feet.

Wanck teamed with Persun, Rossettie, and Alex Arcesi to win the 3,200-meter relay in a time of 9:42.14.

The Athens 400-meter relay team of Bishop, Sean Clare, Mitch Hamilton, and Matt Driesbaugh placed firsst in a time of 47.62 seconds.

Sayre freshman Declan Barry finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 21.66 seconds. Barry also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.70 seconds.

Jones finished second in the long jump with a leap of 18-feet, 1-inch, while Mickley was third at 17-feet, 10-inches, and Spencer was fourth at 17-feet, 4-inches.

Comstock finished second in the shot put with a heave of 40-feet, 4 1/4-inches, while Sayre senior David Huang was third at 40-feet, 3/4-inches, and Nittinger was fourth at 35-feet, 10-inches.

Athens junior Caleb Nason was third in the javelin with a throw of 117-feet, 10-inches.

Athens returns to action Thursday at the Chenango Relays at Chenango Forks High School, while Sayre is at Wellsboro Tuesday.
