IAC BASEBALL: TIOGA IMPROVES TO 7-0 WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF NEWFIELD (21 PHOTOS) (2024-04-20)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER — Tioga pulled out a 3-2 win in opening game of a twinbill with Newfield, then cruised to a 13-3 win in the nightcap to improve to 7-0 on the season here Saturday afternoon in IAC South Small School Division baseball action.

Tioga 3, Newfield 2
The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then held off Newfield in the fifth inning for a 3-2 five-inning win in the first game of a doubleheader.

Newfield scored a run in the top of the second, and Tioga had just one hit — a first-inning single by junior Shea Bailey — through the first three innings.

In the home half of the fourth, senior Cam Rought worked a seven-pitch walk, took second on a single by junior Garrett Godfrey, and scored on an RBI single by junior Tate MaCauley.

After Godfrey scored on a passed ball, junior Zac Mumbulo added an insurance run with an RBI single to up the Tioga advantage to 3-1.

Newfield put a pair of runners on base in the top of the fifth against MaCauley, who was then releived by Bailey, who gave up a groundout to score a run, then got another groundout to end the game, and preserve the win.

MaCauley allowed two runs — one earned — one one hit, while striking out four and walking four in 4 1/3 innings of work to earn the win. Bailey retired both batters he face to register the save.

MaCauley singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, while Godfrey singled and scored one run, Mumbulo singled and drove in one run, and Bailey singled, and stole two bases to account for Tioga’s four hits. Rought scored one run in the win.

Tioga 13, Newfield 3

Tioga scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, and cruised to a 13-3 four-inning win over Newfield in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Tigers sent 13 batters to the plate in the second inning in a rally that included a three-run double by senior Cam Rought, an RBI double by freshman Jackson Bombard, who also singled later in the inning, and RBI singles by sophomore Logan Bellis, and junior Garrett Godfrey.

Newfield scored a run on four base on balls in the top of the third, but the Tigers answered with four runs in the home half of the inning to make it 12-1. The rally was highlighted by a two-RBI triple by junior Shea Bailey, and an RBI double by Rought.

Newfield closed the gap to 12-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but Bailey’s RBI single to plate Bellis, who reached on a double, invoked the 10-run “mercy rule.”

Bailey tripled and singled, scored two runs, and had four RBI, and Rought rapped a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had four RBI to highlight Tioga’s 10-hit attack.

Bellis doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run for the Tigers, while Bombard doubled and singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Godfrey singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, Luke Powell singled and scored three runs, and senior Ousmane Duncanson, and freshman Cooper Dember each crossed the plate once.

Godfrey earned the win for the Tigers, allowing three runs — one earned — on one hit, while striking out five and walking seven.

Tioga returns to action Monday at Union Springs in a rematch of last year’s IAC Small School championship game.
