SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: ROBINSON, CROFT LEAD WAVERLY TO 40-20 WIN OVER GREENE (2024-04-20)

GREENE — Waverly led for the majority of the game, but needed a pair of late TDs to put away a 40-20 win over a pesky Greene here Saturday afternoon in Section IV flag football action.

Senior Paige Robinson had a career day throwing the ball. She completed 18 of 24 passes for 247 yards, and four TDs, while being picked off once.

Senior Ashlen Croft also had a career day at receiver, with seven receptions for 136 yards and three TDs. Senior Erica Ryck added five receptions for 42 yards, and one TD, while freshman Lauryn Welles added four catches for 44 yards, and Cooney chipped in with two grabs for 25 yards.

Robinson ALSO rushed for a team-high 88 yards and one TD on nine carries for the Wolverines, who had 477 yards in total offense in the contest. Senior Ally Barrett added 76 yards on nine carries in the win, while Croft had 21 yards on one carry, junior Brynn Cooney added 19 yards and one TD on three carries, junior Avalynn Boots chipped in with 16 yards on three carries, and sophomore Emma Vanderhoof had 10 yards on one carry.

Waverly opened the scoring with a 21-yard TD pass from Robinson to Croft to take a 6-0 lead, but Greene answered with a 31yard TD by Nadia Brown, and also tacked on a two-point conversion to take its only lead of the game at 8-6.

The Wolverines responded with a 60-yard scoring drive, capped by a 7-yard TD pass from Robinson to Ryck to make it 12-8.

Robinson scored a 2-yard TD run, and tacked on the extra point to give the Wolverines a 19-8 lead, but the Trojans scored late in the half to close the gap to 19-14.

Cooney opened the second-half scoring with a 5-yard TD run to make it 25-14, but Greene answered again on a long TD run to trim the deficit to 25-20.

Waverly put the game away with a 10-yard TD pass from Robinson to Croft. Robinson hooked up with Cooney on the extra point to make it 32-20 with 8:31 left in the game.

After a defensive stop, Robinson connected with Croft on a 7-yard score, and Barrett added a 10-yard run for the two-point conversion to make it 40-20 with 2:35 left in the contest.

Waverly, now 4-0-1, returns to action Wednesday at Susquehanna Valley.
