STAC BASEBALL: MONTOURSVILLE HANDS WAVERLY FIRST LOSS OF SEASON (2024-04-20)

WAVERLY — Montoursville scored early, and kept adding to its lead in a 9-3 win over previously-unbeaten Waverly here Saturday afternoon in non-league baseball action.

The Warriors scored one run in the top of the first inning, three more in the third, and led 7-0 after 4 1/2 innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Wolverines got on the board on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of senior Ethan Perry, and an RBI single by senior Joey Tomasso to close the gap to 7-2, but Montoursville answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to push the advantage back to seven runs, at 9-2.

Waverly closed out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout off the bat of freshman Matthias Welles.

Tomasso singled twice and drove in one run to pace Waverly’s five-hit attack, while Perry and Welles each singled and knocked in one run, and senior Sean Bubniak added a single. Senior jay Pipher scored two runs for the Wolverines, and freshman Ben Shaw scored one.

Jay Pipher was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking five in four innings of work.

Sophomore Porter Daddona allowed four runs on five hits and two walks in three innings of relief.

Waverly, now 11-1, returns to action Monday at Susquehanna Valley.
