Valley Sports Report
UNION SPRINGS — Union Springs used a strong pitching performance, and a pair of timely hits to pull out a 2-0 win over Tioga here Monday afternoon in IAC Small School baseball action.

“It was a great game … playoff-caliber pitching from both teams,” said Tioga coach Kevin Evanek.

“Cam Rought was outstanding on the mound,” noted Evanek. “He definitely pitched good enough to win.

“(Union Springs) was able to push a couple runs across with more timely hitting,” he said. “We just couldn’t come up with big hits when we got  runners on base.

“I’m very happy with the way our guys battled against a very good team,” added Evanek.

Junior Jack Walters tossed a 3-hitter for the Wolves to earn the win, striking out five and walking one in seven innings.

Union Springs turned back-to-back single by junior Parker Botindari and junior Shane Perkins into a run in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, sophomore Asa Brown stroked a two-out single, and junior Jack Walters followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to make it 2-0.

Tioga’s three hits came on a one-out single in the second inning by junior Tate MaCauley, a two-out single in the third inning by sophomore Logan Bellis, and a lead-off single in the sixth by junior Shea Bailey.

Senior Cam Rought was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking one in six innings.
