CONKLIN, N.Y. — Waverly bounced back from its first loss of the season with an offensive onslaught in a 16-4 win over Susquehanna Valley in STAC baseball action.

Senior Jay Pipher led the Wolverines’ 15-hit attack with four hits, including a home run, four runs scored, two stolen bases, and five RBI, while senior Joey Tomasso was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and three RBI, and freshman Matthias Welles stroked three singles, stole two bases, and had four RBI.

Senior Ethan Perry tripled and singled, scored three runs, stole three bases, and drove in one run in the win, while sophomore Hogan Shaw doubled and singled, and scored two runs, senior Jake VanHouten added a single, freshman Ben Shaw scored one run, stole two bases, and knocked in one run, freshman Justin Koenig scored two runs, and junior Jack Cheresnowsky crossed the plate once.

Sophomore Ronin Ault earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out eight and walking two in six innings. Welles pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing an unearned run, and issued one walk.

The Wolverines, who lost to District 4 power Montoursville Saturday, went to work quickly, loading the bases to start the game on back-to-back singles by Pipher and Perry, and a walk to Tomasso. Welles stroked a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.

VanHouten followed with a single to re-load the bases, but the next two batters struck out. Ben Shaw worked a walk to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.

The Sabers responded with two runs in the home half of the first inning, but Waverly answered that with a run in the second inning, five in the third, and three more in the fourth to take a 12-2 lead.

Waverly took a 4-2 lead in the second on an RBI double by Tomasso, but left the bases loaded.

In the third inning, Ben Shaw led off with a walk, and Hogan Shaw reached on a bunt single. Pipher delivered both runs with a single up the middle to make it 6-2, and Perry followed with an RBI triple into the gap to extend the lead to 7-2.

Waverly’s final two runs came on a bases-loaded walk to senior Sean Bubniak, and a wild pitch.

Waverly stretched its lead to 12-2 on a two-out, two-RBI single by Pipher, and a run-scoring single by Tomasso in the fifth.

After SV scored in the bottom of the fifth, Pipher belted a three-run home run to right field in the sixth inning to make it 15-3.

Waverly took a 16-3 lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Tomasso, and SV finished off the scoring in the home half.

Waverly, now 12-1, returns to action Friday when it hosts Oneonta.
