SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: WAVERLY BATTLES TO 27-27 TIE WIN SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY (2024-04-24)

Valley Sports Report
CONKLIN, N.Y. — Senior Paige Robinson rushed for 272 yards, but a late miscue forced Waverly to settle for a 27-27 tie with Susquehanna Valley in Section IV flag football action here on a cold and windy Wednesday night.

“We had our chances to win for sure,” said Waverly coach Dave Shaw. “We turned the ball over on their 1, and on their 5 twice.

“It was cold and windy, and we really struggled to throw the ball,” noted Shaw. “But, we ran the ball great.”

Waverly jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on TD runs of 4 yards by senior Ally Barrett, and 16 yards by Robinson.

SV scored a pair of TDs, sandwiched around a 21-yard TD run by Barrett to trim Waverly’s lead to 20-13 at the half.

After the Sabers closed the gap to 20-19 early in the second half, Robinson scored on a 7-yard run to give the Wolverines a 27-19 lead.

SV scored again to pull within two points, at 27-25, and had the ball late in the game when a Waverly defender intercepted a pass, and ran back into the end zone on the return, where the Sabers pulled the flag for a safety to tie the game.

Robinson led Waverly’s ground game with 272 yards and two TDs on 27 carries, while Barrett added 112 yards and two TDs on 17 carries as the Wolverines rushed for 395 yards in the contest. Senior Erica Ryck chipped in with 10 yards on two carries.

Robinson completed 8 of 19 passes for 40 yards, and two interceptions. Freshman Lauryn Welles led Waverly with three receptions for 17 yards, while Ryck had two catches for 12 yards, and sophomore Avalynn Boots chipped in with two grabs for 11 yards.

Sophomores Mira Kittle and Claire Clonch led the Wolverines with nine flag-pulls spice, while senior Brenae Tedesco had eight, Welles added six, and Ryck chipped in with three.

Waverly, now 4-0-2, hosts Johnson City Saturday at 4 p.m.
