At 195 pounds, Benton senior Logan Womelsdorf topped Chestnut Ridge junior Connor Buttry, 3-1, for third place.

At 220 pounds, Wyalusing senior Dylan Otis gained a bit of redemption against Cambridge Springs junior Zach Stafford, beating him, 7-4, to claim fifth place. Stafford’s 3-1 overtime win over Otis in the quarterfinals knocked him into the wrestlebacks.

TROY — The East, led by Towanda’s Noah Huff and Athens’ Brandon Fauver, raced out to a 14-point halftime lead en route to an 82-72 win over the West here Monday night in the NTL Seniors Game at the Troy Commons Building.

Huff knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points and Fauver added 11 points, while Towanda’s Nick Place drained a trio of 3-pointers as the East took a 47-33 lead into the halftime locker room. (The game was played in two 20-minute halves.)

TROY — Instead of dividing the NTL seniors into teams by the old method — East vs. West — or the new one — Division 1 vs. Division 2, the powers-that-be in the NTL decided to try to even things out by choosing teams.

It worked perfectly as the White team — consisting of players from Troy, North-Penn Mansfield, Williamson and Wellsboro — pulled out a hard-fought, 45-42, win over the Black team, which fielded players from Athens, Wyalusing, Canton, Towanda and North Penn-Liberty. ...more

NEW YORK STATE WRESTLING: FROM DISAPPOINTMENT TO STATE TITLE IN ONE YEAR FOR WAVERLY FRESHMAN A.J. BURKHART (2015-03-10)

WAVERLY — One year ago, A.J. Burkhart was disappointed.

Then an eighth-grader, Burkhart knew he was capable of competing at the state tournament. However he happened to be in the same weight at sectionals as one of the best in the state and when the wild cards came out, he wasn’t selected.

“It was real motivating not getting the wild card last year,” Burkhart said. “Having the kid who took third at states in my sectional bracket and seeing kids I’ve beaten place at states, it really motivated me to get there this year.” ...more

The 2014-15 season saw three of the Valley’s four boys basketball teams qualify for the postseason, but two of them did so with a sub-.500 record.

THE VALLEY — With the winter sports season coming to a conclusion Thursday, Valley Sport Report will put the finishing touches on its coverage for 2014-15 winter season this week with "All-Valley Week," honoring the top athletes in each sport.

Valley Sports Report will honor the “Super 7” (All-Valley) in each sport, as well as all-rookie teams, and various other honors, depending on the sport, including all-defensive teams, and athletes to “watch in 2015-16.“
