ATHENS — All game long the Wildcats hit the ball hard.

But, for most of the game those hard shots were right at sure-handed Shamokin defenders.

Athens pounded out eight hits in the game and rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, but a two-run seventh by Shamokin lifted the Indians to a 4-3 victory in the District 4, Class AAA softball playoff opener. ...more

THE VALLEY —It was a big moment for the FC United girls’ soccer team last year.

They won their first game in the State Cup Final Four, beating one of the traditional powers.

This year the team, which features three area standouts in Waverly’s Emiley Myers and Liia Carpenter and Athens’ Kirsten Colegrove, is headed back to the State Cup Final Four, but this time they have much bigger goals. ...more

THE VALLEY — During the school year, the rivalry between Athens and Sayre is a big one.

The teams always look forward to anytime they get to square off in any sport.

During the high school soccer season, Adam Moore plays for Sayre and Ryan Segar for Athens, but once the travel season begins, the two are teammates with the FC United 16U team.

SELINSGROVE — When Elyse Skerpon finished the 300-meter hurdles she didn’t realize exactly what she had accomplished.

Skerpon, a junior, knew she had won her first district title, but what she didn’t know was she had also broke the district record — winning in a time of 45.55 seconds. She eclipsed the record of 44.85 seconds set by Tesa McKibben of Montoursville in 2009. ...more

SELINSGROVE — For many competitors, sports can almost feel like life or death.

After exuding so much time, energy and effort into just one race, one jump or one throw, the event can take on an almost monolithic importance. Winning or losing seems like life or death.

Of course, the sun will still come up if a runner takes third at Districts or a jumper misses a mark by less than an inch. Life will go on.
